Visit to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve

A Wildlife Sanctuary Experience on 18.7.2023, 100 Students of Grade IX accompanied by 8 Faculty , embarked on an educational trip to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, a renowned wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve nestled in the Palakkad district of Kerala, India. This report provides an overview of our experience during the visit, highlighting the sanctuary’s ecological significance, diverse wildlife, and notable attractions such as the Parambikulam Dam.
Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is a well-preserved ecological hotspot spread across an expansive area of approximately 643 square kilometers (248 square miles). It holds significant importance as part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reserve showcases breathtaking landscapes and encompasses several dams and lakes, including the renowned Parambikulam Dam.
During our journey through the sanctuary, the students were captivated by the region’s scenic beauty and pleasant weather. As we ventured deeper into the forest, we were delighted to witness an array of wildlife species in their natural habitat. Notable sightings included majestic animals like the Bison, Elephant, various species of deer, and an assortment of vibrant birds.
A highlight of our visit was the encounter with the Kannimara Teak Tree, the world’s largest natural teak tree. This magnificent tree has earned recognition for its grandeur and was awarded the prestigious Mahavriksha Puraskar in 1994-95. Standing tall and proud, the tree symbolizes the rich biodiversity found within the sanctuary.
Our visit concluded with a visit to the Parambikulam Dam, a prominent attraction within the reserve. Spanning across the Parambikulam River, which originates in the Anaimalai Hills of Tamil Nadu and flows through the sanctuary, the dam is an impressive architectural marvel. Surrounded by lush forests and picturesque landscapes, the dam forms a vast reservoir covering an area of approximately 23 square kilometers (8.9 square miles). The tranquil waters of the reservoir mirror the lush greenery, creating a breathtaking sight for visitors.
Parambikulam Tiger Reserve stands as a testament to India’s conservation efforts, providing a vital habitat for endangered wildlife species. The reserve’s commitment to eco-tourism ensures the preservation of the delicate ecosystem while promoting sustainable tourism practices. The trip enlightened us about the importance of preserving such natural treasures for future generations.
The visit to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve was a remarkable experience for the Grade IX students. We witnessed the wonders of nature, observed diverse wildlife species, and appreciated the efforts undertaken to conserve this pristine sanctuary. The memories we created and the knowledge gained during our trip will remain with us, inspiring a deeper understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation and the preservation of our natural heritage.
